چکیده

We present radial velocities for 144 globular clusters (GCs) around the Virgo gE NGC 4472 (M49), and ages and metallicities from co-added spectra of 131 GCs. We confirm our earlier finding that the metal-poor GCs have a significantly higher velocity dispersion than the metal-rich GCs, and we find little or no rotation in the metal-rich GCs. The velocity dispersion profile is consistent with isotropic orbits for the GCs and the NGC 4472 mass distribution inferred from X-ray data. Our sample of GCs spans a metallicity range of −1.6 ≤ [Fe/H] ≤ 0 dex. The metal-poor and metal-rich GC populations are coeval within the errors, and all GCs older than 6 Gyr at 95% confidence. Our findings are consistent with a merger origin for NGC 4472, but other elliptical formation models cannot be ruled out.

Globular Cluster Metallicity Subpopulations in NGC 4472

Bimodality is a common feature of globular cluster (GC) color distributions in galaxies. Although it is well known that the GC system of the Milky Way is bimodal in metallicity, this has yet to be directly demonstrated for an elliptical galaxy. We use Lick index measurements from the literature to derive metallicities for 47 GCs in the giant Virgo elliptical galaxy NGC 4472. The resulting distr...

[oiii] 5007 Emission from the Black-hole X-ray Binary in a Ngc 4472 Globular Cluster

We present the discovery of [OIII] 5007 emission associated with the black hole X-ray binary recently identified in a globular cluster in the Virgo elliptical galaxy NGC 4472. This object is the first confirmed black-hole X-ray binary in a globular cluster. The identification of [OIII] 5007 emission from the black-hole hosting globular cluster is based on two independent fiber spectra obtained ...

Supersoft and Quasisoft X-ray Sources in the Globular Clusters of Ngc 4472: Are They Candidates for Intermediate-mass Black Holes?

We report on possible associations between 6 globular clusters in the Virgo elliptical galaxy NGC 4472 (M49) and bright (Lx > 1038 erg s−1) very soft X-ray sources (VSSs). Two of the VSSs have broad-band spectral properties consistent with those of luminous supersoft X-ray sources (SSSs). The other VSSs are somewhat harder harder, possibly with values of k T between roughly 150 eV and 250 eV. T...

Optical multi-slit spectra have been obtained for 47 globular clusters surrounding the brightest Virgo elliptical NGC 4472 (M49). Including data from the literature, we analyze velocities for a total sample of 57 clusters and present the first tentative evidence for kinematic differences between the red and – 2 – blue cluster populations which make up the bimodal colour distribution of this gal...
